Marketing to the next generation

by Chelle Parmele on July 9, 2008

My sister-in-law, Tanya, makes beautiful quilts, among other things. With a curious 4 year old (almost five!) in the house, she and my brother spend a lot of time sharing their wide array of hobbies with their daughter, Vienne. This morning Vienne and Tanya had the following conversation.

Vienne:    Mommy, I want to go to a quilt store.
Tanya:    Why?
Vienne:    Because it has been a long time since we went to the quilt store.
Tanya:    Which one should we go to?
Vienne:    The one close to our house (said in a tone of ‘well, duh mom, what other quilt store is there?)
Tanya:    What do we need to look for?
Vienne:    Well, I want to find some fabric so you can make some blankets for my babies.

Well, hello there consumer waiting in the wings!

So these are my questions – Are you investing in the next generation of consumers?

Is your business kid friendly? Do you encourage families to come in and shop together? Show a child how much fun building a birdhouse is, or help her pick out the proper material for her quilts and you’ve started a relationship with a customer that will last for generations to come.
